The Arizona Cardinals released quarterback Matt Leinart today. With so much speculation for the past week, there was no way Leinart would remain on this team. It sounds like it to me, that the club tried everything to move him via a trade but struck out. The speculation that Leinart was likely to be released, and due to make $7.38 million in salary next year, not including a $5.5 million roster bonus, no team was stupid enough to grab him.
It’s positive for the front office that they don’t have to pay Leinart’s $2.485 million salary this season, but the negative is he has collected about $17.6 million from the club since being the 10th overall pick in the 2006 draft.
Undrafted quarterback from BYU, Max Hall is now the number 2 unless the club makes a move over the next week or two.
Finally, an end to a horrible ride for fans, Cardinals front office and Leinart. I expect that Kurt Warner is getting calls from Michael Bidwill, Rod Graves and Ken Whisenhunt. I bet they are begging for another season. I am still sticking to my prediction in January, Warner will be back by at least Week 6.
This situation was handled terribly and both sides such be blamed. This reminds me of the old culture of the Phoenix/Arizona Cardinals front office. I hope this isn’t a sign of the future – “Same old Cardinals”.
For the record, Leinart played in 29 games with 17 starts for Arizona and threw for 3,893 yards with 14 touchdowns and 20 interceptions.
It will be a long season for Cardinal fans!
