Loser of the Day: You Won’t Believe An Excuse To Get Out Of A Speeding Ticket

It wasn’t a hoary chestnut along the lines of “I spilled coffee in my lap” or “My wife’s having a baby.” In fact, Naperville police say the excuse Lucas S. Wright offered as to why he was driving at 100 mph was one they hadn’t heard before.

Wright, 24, was stopped about 7 p.m. Wednesday as he allegedly zoomed along on West 75th Street, where the speed limit is posted at 50 mph. And just what, according to police Sgt. Lee Martin, did Wright have to say for himself?

“He said he’d just gotten his car washed and he was trying to dry it off.”

Wright could soon be telling that to a judge in DuPage County Circuit Court in Wheaton, where he will answer a misdemeanor charge of speeding 40 mph or more over the posted limit.

Police officer Jason Stubler was on duty that evening and monitoring westbound traffic on 75th Street as Wright’s gray 2006 Honda Accord approached Book Road from Rickert Drive, Martin said Thursday. Stubler’s radar indicated Wright was traveling at 100 mph, he said.

There is at least one freestanding car wash near 75th Street and Rickert Drive, as well as several automatic, drive-through washes at nearby service stations.

Stubler, upon closer inspection, discovered “the car was wet, so Wright did have it washed,” Martin said. “And just in time to get it towed” and temporarily impounded by police, he added wryly.

Wright lives on the 800 block of Beaumont Drive, in the Brittany Springs Apartments in far west-central Naperville. He is free on bail and awaiting arraignment.
