An Arkansas radio personality who wore a Florida Gators hat to an Arkansas Hogs news conference says she’s been fired.
Renee Gork announced on Twitter Monday that she had been fired by KAKS, a northwest Arkansas radio station that calls itself Hog Sports Radio.
Gork had worn a Gator hat Saturday to a news conference with Arkansas football coach Bobby Petrino.
Petrino’s team lost to the Gators last season 23-20 at Florida. He mentioned Gork’s hat after answering a question she asked.
Petrino said, “And that will be the last question I answer with that hat on.”
Gork is a Florida graduate. This morning Gork confirms her choice of the hat was a dumb mistake. Gork also defended her actions as a mistake, not a publicity stunt. She said it was an innocent mistake to have the hat on in the first place and that she sent a letter of apology to Petrino.
KAKS general manager Dan Storrs confirmed that Gork was no longer working for the station but declined to comment further. In the meantime, Storrs said confirmed the firing with The Associated Press, “This radio station is Hog Sports Radio. We are very biased. We support the Razorbacks 100 percent.”
100% come on?!
This is where I love that I don’t work for a flagship station! We can always be objective without a Program Director or General Manager driving a show or topic.
Wouldn’t you rather know that someone was a fan of a rival team instead of them pretending to be completely objective about sports? The reality is an awful lot of Razorback media aren’t actually Arkansas fans.
The irony! All Gork did was wear a hat of another team. In Gork’s defense, she’s not the first reporter to attend a practice, press conference or game wearing another school’s logo or colors. It’s not something you see all the time, but you do see it from time to time.
By firing her the GM is showing how non-objective his station must be in covering sports. Objective reporting just went out the window.
I think it says an awful lot more about Bobby Petrino than it does about her. Look at his past!
